Preparation is Oh So Important…


It would seem we made a misstep yesterday.  We ended up ordering dinner.  We did at least order cheap food and not splurge with appetizers or dessert or anything, but still… it was unplanned food we ordered.

Why, you ask, would we break our streak we’ve been working so hard to build?  Honestly?  Because we weren’t prepared.  I was having a really emotionally craptastic day, the stress of which ended up giving me a pounding headache.  I felt like crap and couldn’t bear to face standing in the kitchen for 45 minutes cooking the dinner we had planned.  And unfortunately we were not prepared for Plan B.  We had nothing easy and quick to cook in the house.  It was a stupid mistake to not have a contingency plan for days like yesterday, and we paid the price… mentally because I felt guilty and financially because we ordered food.

So the first order of business for today was to procure food to keep that from happening again.  We went to Costco and bought a box of their frozen pizzas to keep in the freezer.  Now when I feel lousy, or we’re busy, or whatever the problem… we can toss a pizza in the oven and have dinner in 15 minutes.  And the pizzas cost less than $3/ea, so with a shared bag of steamed veggies, it’s a $4 meal for the two of us.  I grant you it’s not as healthy as it could be, but having frozen pizza is far and away better than ordering food or going out for fast food.

I was pretty upset with myself yesterday, but it was what it was and continuing to beat myself up over it won’t help.  The only thing I really could do was prepare for the next time, which we did.

Pretty pleased with myself for today, though.  We stuck to the plan we had for yesterday and made food at home, instead of letting one day of ordering start a trend.  It surely wouldn’t be the first time that happened!  But we had some beef thawed that we needed to use, and thankfully I wasn’t willing to throw it in the trash.  We cooked some frozen stir fry veggies to go with the diced up beef in a sauce of hoisin and soy sauce, and served it over brown basmati rice made in the rice cooker.  {Seriously, that rice cooker is one of my favorite appliances.  Not only does it cook the rice to absolute perfection, but since we have basmati rice, it smells amazing while it cooks.}

Other than that, I don’t seem to have accomplished much today.  Now I’m trying to prepare myself for tomorrow morning.  Ginger’s teeth cleaning and extractions are tomorrow and we have to drop her off at the vet between 7:30 and 9.  I know this is a very routine procedure, but I can’t help worrying.  And I’m already drowning in the guilt of having to leave her there alone.  It’s going to be a very long day, waiting for the time we can go pick her up and bring her home.  Picture of the future patient for illustrative purposes…
