Sometimes All It Takes Is A Spit Shine…

Okay, so that’s not entirely true.  I would never clean anything with spit because, ew.  BUT the general point is valid.  Sometimes shining something up makes us appreciate it in a whole new way, or at least appreciate it again, almost as much as when it was new, or “new” to us.  Things get old, dirty, dingy, and can use a good cleaning, and sometimes it’s amazing how much of a difference it can make!

For example?  For example, my car.  My car is a 2005 KIA Spectra with 103k miles on it.  It’s nothing fancy or special, but we own it out right and it gets us to where we need to go.  As of late, I hadn’t appreciated it much and it was because it had gotten to be such a mess.  There was trash, and it was dirty, and just overall it was a mess.  My father in law is coming up next week and we’ll be chauffeuring him around in it, so that meant we needed to give it a clean.  So late yesterday it was relatively cool, and I got a great deal on a $3.99 set of floor mats to replace the old worn out ones, so we decided to give ‘er a once over.

First was the drive through the car wash.  Next was getting out all the trash, taking advantage of the free vacuums, and polishing up the dash and cleaning the windows.  All in all, it took us about a half hour to do it, and the car is such a much nicer place now.

This phenomenon of appreciating cleaned up things struck me again when we came home after cleaning the car.  We had friends that had planned to come over yesterday, so we had done some cleaning.  When we walked in the house, it was neat and clean and just generally pleasant to come home to.  We didn’t spend any money on capturing that feeling.  All it took was putting stuff where it goes, and cleaning the things that are there.  {It also helped that we walked into a burst of cool, air conditioned air from the heat!}  After that, we just relaxed for the rest of the evening together, enjoying the AC and having endless chats about books and things we used to read.  Good discussion is always my favorite frugal pastime.

Then today we did something not especially frugal, but in a frugal way.  We hadn’t been to the movies since sometime in 2017 when we went to see Beauty and the Beast, and we decided we’d like to go.  Part of the reason for deciding to go now was that the theater emailed me a coupon for a free large popcorn for my birthday {to be used in the month of June}, and since a large popcorn is $10, we figured we’d take advantage.  But to keep costs lower, we went to a matinee showing and split the popcorn.  It was a nice change of pace to go see a movie, and the movie we saw was a great one to see in the theater.  {Hereditary, if you’re curious.}  It meant putting off grocery shopping until tomorrow afternoon, but sometimes it’s nice to just do something fun and frivolous.

And now I’m about to curl up with a book borrowed from the library and do some reading while Hubs takes his before-work nap.  Friday nights are exciting around these parts.

Hope everyone’s week ended well!
